To increase public awareness regarding the significance of mental health :
Mental health literacy is a related concept which is increasingly seen as an important measure of the awareness and knowledge of mental health disorders. Awareness and health literacy are two sides of the same coin.
Stigma and discrimination are negative consequences of ignorance and misinformation. There are a few studies which have measured mental health literacy in the Indian context.
One study found mental health literacy among adolescents to be very low, i.e. depression was identified by 29.04% and schizophrenia/psychosis was recognized only by 1.31%. Stigma was noted to be present in help-seeking. These findings reinforce the need to increase awareness of mental health.
To address the myths and misinformation reading mental illness in an effort to gain understanding, minimize stigma and improve attitudes about mental disorders :
Stigma is a consequence of misinformation and lack of understanding. Stigma associated with mental health issues remains to be one of the major barriers for seeking help. Education and awareness programs have been proven to be successful in reducing stigma. Hence, we aim to provide a multimodal approach in providing mental health awareness.
To promote mental health and prevent mental disorders :
We aim to reduce the incidence, prevalence, and recurrence of mental health disorders and their associated disability. Re-live India’s preventive interventions are based on modifying risk exposure and strengthening the coping mechanisms of the individual.
All of us have mental health just like our physical health and yet it remains a taboo subject that is susciptible to age-old stigmas, prejudices and fears.
This results in some people suffering from unidentified prolong mental illness. Hence, we wish to educate and spread awareness on the importance of mental health which would further encourage people to seek help at the right time.
